Gythion Info

Gythion, one of the most beautiful ports of the Mediterranean, can offer a number of hotels, a set of traditional taverns, restaurants and above all Ouzo bars, which serve the "Meze" (hors-d'oeuvre) from grilled octopus for which Gythion is famous.

The main attractions of Gythion are the numerous fishing boats in the port, the neoclassic buildings along the beachfront, the ancient theatre and Kranae Island, one of the most scenic parts of the area.

In 1898 Kranae Island was linked with the mainland by a platform. According to Homer's writing it is the island where beautiful Helen of Sparta spent her first romantic night together with Paris of Troy. At their departure Paris forgot his helmet ("Kranos") - hence the name of the little island. In the middle of the Kranae Island, the Janetakis Tower, which was built at approximately 1700 AC, has been recently restored and houses the Historical and Ethnological museum of Mani, which deals with the exploration of the Mani region through the centuries. At the last edge of the Kranae Island is situated the impressive, 23 metres high, lighthouse of Gythion, which was built in 1873.

In the Northern part of Gythion, near the entrance of the city and close to the present army barracks is situated the ancient theatre. According to the myth, Hercules and Apollo built it together. It was renovated during the Roman age. Nowadays, ancient plays take place during summer.

You can also see the foundations of the first stage wall dated back to the early AC years. Southeast of the theatre there was an ancient agora. Above the theatre, on the top of the 50m hill the Acropolis was situated. Today the remains of its walls are distinguishable. Here, there were the temple of Athena and the Gates of Castorides as well as a bridge, the leftovers of which are still preserved.

Just outside the town of Gythion, the wonderful beach of Mavrovouni invites tourists to swim, relax on its sandy beach, backed by trees and have lunch at the taverns serving Greek menu. The characteristic of Mavrovouni beach is peace, perfect peace. Mavrovouni is perfect for anyone wanting to relax or make surfing, since it is very windy during specific hours of the day.
